Kilkis Development Agency S.A. OTA (ANKI) is working on producing a user-friendly Methodological Handbook for the management of sustainable tourism products and projects, in the framework of implementation of the actions of the NETOURAL project.
According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), sustainable tourism is "tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts and meets the needs of visitors, the industry and communities to the receiving destinations". It also recommends the activity "considered to lead to the management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be met while maintaining cultural integrity, basic ecological processes, biological diversity and the life support system". The large family of sustainable tourism includes soft tourism, green tourism, alternative tourism, etc.
In Greece, with tourism providing 25% of GDP and being the steam engine of the economy, sustainable tourism offers the rails it needs to move even further forward. Sustainable tourism can contribute to maintaining high and stable levels of economic growth not only in the tourist regions, where it is a key pillar of economic and social life, but also in the entire country. The main objective of the current national tourism policy is to turn Greece into a model country for sustainable tourism.
Therefore, the creation of such a "tool" for businesses and policymakers in the tourism sector is absolutely imperative and crucial, especially for the Kilkis Regional Unit and the cross-border region in general where, on the one hand, sustainable development is a political choice of the central government, and on the other hand, tourism development lags behind, although the environment is perfectly amenable to and attractive for the development of sustainable tourism.
